Day 5 - Calmer day at sea on route to Macquarie Island

22 January 2014

We had a full day at sea and made good time in the calm conditions with an average speed of 12 knots. The wind and waves changed from every direction all day long as watched out for all the bird species flying around the boat.
We had lectures on the flora of the subantarctics, how to ID bird of the southern ocean and the geology and fauna of Macquarie islands.

While at sea it is a great chance to spot birds so I spent a lot of time of the bridge spotting grey headed, white capped wandering, and royal albatross, fairy and antarctic prions, blue, white chinned and mottled petrels and sooty shearwaters.

A pod of 30 hourglass dolphins Lagenorhynchus cruciger small black and white dolphins were riding the ships bow for several minutes – really unique dolphins.
