Kompong Cham

2 December 2012

From horrible busy tourist area to nice relaxing friendly rural Cambodia. An early bus made good use of the day where we were able to visit the weaving villages of Kompong Cham and biked across the bamboo bridge and explore Pan Island in the middle of the Mekong. Everyone was so friendly and all the kids were practicing their English saying 'hello' to us which was nice.

It was chaos trying to ride bikes through the town but we got the hang of it. Tried our first Cambodian bakery which was delicious.

We took a tour out to the weaving villages to see how they wove silk and cotton. This is a silk weaving machine

We gave a donation of $1US to this local silk weaver who showed us how she weaved, I have never seen someone so grateful. This makes you realise how poor these people are when they work a full week and only get $10.

Our funny friendly tuk tuk driver shows us the many uses of cotton cloth.....towel, head cloths, sarong, scarf

Winding up the cotton ready to be used on the weaving machine

This lady showed us how to weave cotton and Glenn brough some cloth

Bundles of died cotton drying int he sun

Bamboo bridge to Pan Island. They build these bridges at the start of each dry season so locals can get across to the island.

We saw motorbikes, cars, bikes and people going across the bridge. There was even a passing area half way along.

It was nice following random tracks around the island and seeing the peaceful life the people have on this island.

We enjoyed this view while we refreshed with this sugarcane drink from freshly squeezed sugarcane and zitris which really hit the spot.

The bridge toll booth. Everyone crossing had to pay a toll.

I loved this bridge as you can see by how many pics I have posted. It was so well constructed and such a great idea.
