Irrawaldy river dolphins

3 and 4 December 2012

The last couple of days we have had a real Cambodian experience with Glenn having to share the his seat with two other people for the 6hr trip to Kratie, then 25+ people being squeezed into a mini van to Ban Lung with even two people in the drivers seat. Only in Asia : )

We came to Kratie to see the critically endangered Irrawaldy river dolphins. They live only here between Kratie and the Lao border and we were lucky enough to spot many individuals in a population of only 75 remaining at Kampi.

We had fun in the markets buying dragonfruit, mangos and trying the local coffee.

The motorboat took us up to a small set of rapids where we drifted with the current and saw many dolphins swimming around in the current.

You had to be quick as they didnt stay on the surface for long

Sunset at the Monastery. This was one of the most stunning sunsets I have ever seen. After this we went by the river and the entire sky and river turned yellow, red, pink then orange.

The Monk statues lining the path all the way up to Phnom Sombok

Kratie is famous for Krolan (sticky rice, beans and cocnut milk steamed inside a bamboo tube). We gave it a go and didnt see the big deal.

After a long ride in the bus to Ban Lung we visited Boeng Yeak Laom - a clear blue crater lake surrounded by jungle just out of Ban Lung

We couldnt resist a swim which was perfect.

Our tuk tuk driver crashed on the way back to town. It lost complete power up a hill, started free wheeling then smashed and flipped into a bank. Luckily we were onto it and jumped out just in time otherwise there would have been some broken arms and legs. This guy in the pic saw the crash and wanted to 'pay it forward' and help the tuk tuk driver repair the damage.
