We got up early to check out the big castle on the hill in Werzburg before continuing our drive down the "Romantic road" to Rothenburg where we spent a few hours wandering the pretty streets before getting back in the car and heading to Stuttgart.
Wuerzburg Castle
Walking along the outside walls of the castle
View of Weurzburg from the castle gardens. The entire city was rebuilt after WW2 as it was severly damaged in an air raid towards the end of the war.
Our first view of Rothenberg. We parked the car just outside one of the city gates and walked into the center.
On our way we came across this shop selling "Snowballs". They are unique to Rothenberg and are made of layers of thin shortbread type biscuit and covered in all kinds of flavours. We tried chocolate and coconut. (They look more exciting than they taste)
The town is very well known for its massive christmas shop. It was a bit like a grotto with little rooms everywhere all filled with christmas decorations.
The Rathaus and Tower (which of course we had to climb).
View of the edge of the town from the tower. Unlike some of the other walled cities we have been to this one has mostly stayed within its walls and is surrounded by farmland and forest.
In the middle of this picture you can see one of the watchtowers and part of the wall.
Karen taking a stroll in the wall. We walked around almost the entire town on a covered pathway like this on the inside of the wall.
