Weimar and Wuerzburg

10 October 2011

Weimar was once home to Goethe and Schiller (Famous German Writers) but other than that we couldn't really find anything exciting here. We also notice the lack of English here due to the former soviet control. While the West Germans were learning English as a second language the East Germans were learning Russian. This also accounts for the fact that there are few churches here as the communists were against religion and even destroyed many East German churches and cathedrals.

We spent the morning looking around but quickly got back on the road to Wuerzburg. It was great to arrive in this typical Bavarian city full of character

We couldnt figure out why the Ginkgo plant was so famous in Weimar but this is an entire museum dedicated to it.

This is one of the shops with merchadise of the former East German pedestrian crossing men

It was a really foggy cold day cruising along the Autobahn through the Thuringen forest

We stopped on the hour to watch this large scale cuckoo clock. all the bells rang and little men and woman came out and danced while a song played

The Wurzburg Palace or Residense

Underneath this building they were processing grapes to make wine in the cellar

Wuerzburg was heavily bombed by the British on the 19th March 1945 during the end of WW2 which left most of the city in rubble

We went for dinner at a typical German restaurant and had this amazing schnizel with home made potato salad and sauerkraut. The meals were so big and so tasty I was in heaven : )

The restaurant had a great atmosphere. It was really warm, packed out and had these wicked wine chandeliers
