Hong Kong Island

29 October 2011

We saw a completely different side of Hong Kong today from the really busy and what I would call the REAL Hong Kong to the upmarket tourist Central Hong Kong.

We sailed the harbour on a chinese junk boat (Duk Ling Ride), walked the longest esculator in world, went up Hong Kong's tallest building, saw another chinese temple, took the peak tram, went hiking and then saw Hong Kong by night.

The funniest thing was that the lady from the info centre yesterday came and meet us at the start of our boat trip to see how our day went and give us free tasting tickets for the wine festival.

We sailed the harbour on this traditional chinese junk boat.

The sails went up but we wouldnt have gone far without the motor. It was nice heading right up the harbour and seeing the city by water

Enjoying Victoria harbour with this great weather

We handed over our passports, got our name tag and then went to the 55th of 88 floors.

We had some great view of the city and harbour.

It was all very strict. I asked if we could go to the top but that was forbidden. They are very strict on their rules here and they clearly display the consequences. They have signs for example about littering or eating and drinking in the bus with a fixed fine of $1500HKD

We tried some chinese bakery for lunch. This is a ??? which is light sweet soft dough with dried fruit inside.

This is the worlds longest esculator. We sat on here for 25 minutes from bottom to top. In the morning it goes downhill and afternoon it goes uphill.

Another glimpse looking down over the esculator. Im so glad it was there as there were some pretty steep hills.

We had a look through the Man Mo temple. Burning spiral incense hangs in front of the statues. It was interesting seeing how this religion works. The people would light the incense and wave it around while praying, then put it in the sand buckets to burn before crouching in front of the statues to pray.

This is just one of many skyscrapers that had bamboo scaffolding surrounding the outside. It looks so dodgy being bamboo but they seem to tie it all up together and it works well

We went through the zoo and there were monkeys doing tricks. These two were doing trapeze together where one would swing holding the other.

We did our first real touristy thing and took the Peak tram to the top of the hill. It was a super steep ride up

This was the main viewing platform where we got some great views of the city.

We walked the hill tracks but today the smog got worse and worse. This is looking across Hong Kong Island

I went off track to climb to the 'High West' summit.

Looking out at Lamma Island and Pok fu lam reservior

Hong Kong by night is very spectacular with all the lights and skyscrapers

Some more yummy chinese food for dinner
