With limited time, icy conditions and sore legs from the day before we decided to skip the Zugspitze (Germans highest point) and do the Hausberg and Kreuzeck points instead. It was a very average walk compared to yesterday following some ski fields to the top of mountains where all these old people and kids were walking because they had taken the gondolas up to the top. We did however get some nice views of the Bavarian Alps and saw some of the extremely steep down hill skiing tracks
Olympic Bobsled track from 1910-1966 as it is today
A picture of the bobsled track in the middle of winter during the Olympics
This is a typical tramping hut in Europe equiped with restaurant, beer garden and flash rooms. Now I understand why Germans get confused when they come to New Zealand and stay in one of our Great Walks tramping huts. This is near the top of Hausberg at 1340m
View from Kreuzeck with the Alpspitze on the left and Zugspitze on the right
Looking back over Garmisch from the top of Kreuzeck at 1651m
Heading directly down the mountain is the downhill hill track - look how steep it is. The tunnel is for the skiers to pass under the track.
We had some fantastic views from the Eibsee.
The gondola up to the Zugspitze at 2962m
Our hostel was right on the edge of the Olympic Ski Jump. There were 4 different jumps ranging in length and height. It would be so cool to come back here in winter during a competition.
