Schwerin and Rugen Island

3 October 2011

A few light morning showers made Schwerin even more spectacular with mist over the lake as we visited the Schwerin castle on its own small island on the edge of the town. Everything was closed today as it was the Germans National holiday so we stocked up at the Backery and made our way to Rugen Island.

We spent the afternoon exploring the coast and beaches of the south east tip of the Island where we camped near Binz.

The Autobahns are crazy. This is the only place in the world where there is an unlimited speed limit. Such great roads mean we can travel a good distance each day. You think your going fast when you are cruising along at 120kph then someone passes you like a rocket. We saw one guy going at least 220kph today. Now I understand why they sell the Super 98 V-Power petrol as its the only way their cars could go so fast.

The Schwerin castle which is modelled after the Chambout castle we saw in the Loire valley in France.

Massive grey swans in the gardens of the castle

Schwerin town hall. Each each city the town halls are so different.

Loch Ness monster on Schwerins city centre

Interesting street art of pictures of fish

We stopped at Stralsund at the tourist information. This is the famous town hall.

The 2.8km bridge that takes you to Rugen Island

Nikolai church in Stralsund. All the towers of churches in Germany have had matching towers except this one.

Walking around the south east tip of the island at Thiessow

One fo the nice beaches between Thiessow and Gohren

Karen had a go at driving. This is the 20 car line behind her : )
