Lubeck

2 October 2011

We got a little caught up with the long weekend traffic on the autobahns today but finally made it to Lubeck where we were welcomed to the old city with a fairy tale city gate. We did a 3hr walking tour of the city where we visited all the sights. The Altstadt (old town) was surrounded by a canal and had over 6 MASSIVE churches. Why one town needs so many churches I will never know.

We stopped the night in Seehof in a camping place right on the lake. The days are becoming a lot shorter now so we arent getting to fit in as much as we used to be able to in a day (prob doesnt help that we are right up north nearer the arctic either).

Holstentor (city gate) becomed us into the old city

We got a lift up the Petrikirche ( St Petri church) for great view of the city. This is Marienkirche (St Marien church)

Looking back over the city gate with the Salzspeicher buildings on the left where they used to store salt (very important in trading back in the days). You can also see our car parked at the end of the roundabout.

The canal that runs around the old city

Cool stained glass at the Lubeck cathedral

Social housing courtyard which was built for the poor. Its probably one of the nicest place in town now.

Old ladies having their tea weekend coffee and cake in the courtyard

St Jakobs church

We had a look though St Marien church which was heavily damaged in a 1942 british air raid. The bells crashed to the ground during the air raid and left in their place during the reconstuction and lay there to this day.

The Lubeck Rathhaus (town hall)

We camped alongside Lake Schweriner
