Today we did finally get to see some highland games. I would describe them as a cross between an athletics event and and A and P show with rides and stalls. We watched the local heavy weight events (locals throwing heavy things), the kids highland dancing, pipe bands and a visiting gymnastics team. In the afternoon we checked out the Highland Wildlife Sanctuary and saw all sorts of local and not so local animals. It was pissing with rain and I was feeling pretty average having just catching a bad cold so we treated ourselves to a nice B&B as we rocked up into a tiny village called Bankfoot near Perth.
Ruthven barracks. Built by the english to control the passage through the Glen and keep an eye on the scottish.
We arrived at the games to heaps of bagpipers who played throughout the day. It was a competition where judges chose the best players. We had our lunch in the carpark where 6 pipers where warming up and man what a noise.
One of the heavy field events was throwing the hammer
Tossing the caber. They have to toss the wooden post over twice.
Scottish dancing
The pipe bands marched down the main streets and around the athletics field
At the highland wildlife santuary we drove round in our cars like on safari to see all the animals. Karen and a camel
We got pretty close to all the animals which werent at all disturbed by us driving past. This is a buffalo
They even had a polar beer and many other animals which prefer cooler climates as it gets really cold her in the winter and even the summer.
A beaver swimming around its dam.
We stopped by Blai Castle near Perth.
