We had a look at the sights of Belfast today. The titanic was built here so we went to a Titanic exhibition and went to where it was built.
We also had a taxi tour of West belfast where all the fighting occurred in the 'Troubles'. Yesterday on our tour of Derry you could tell our tour guide was catholic and today the taxi guide was protestant which was interesting to get both sides of the conflict.
The titanic exhibition at the transport muesuem was all about the contruction of the ship in Belfast to its sinking and surviver stories.
The Titanic in its first vovage on April 10th 1912
When the Titanic sunk these were the number of crew that survived and died
The Titanic along with its sister ships Britannic and Olympic were build here at the Harland and Wolff shipyard. They build the ships here which was below sea level and when finished flooded the area with water the get the boats out to sea.
This is a keel block that the Titanic lay on while it was being built.
This is where Harland and Wolff designed and drew the plans for the Titanic
On the Black Taxi tour of Belfast we went to both the protestant and catholic areas and learnt all about the conflicts. This is the protestant Shankhill road where we saw the nationalist headquarters in what looked like a normal local pub. The taxi driver was a protestant and said if you walked in there without bullet proof vest and shotgun you wouldnt come out alive.
One of many murals on Shankhill Road
These are the road block gates which they use even today where if they have any trouble or violence then these gates shut to separate the two sides
The peace line (peace wall) on Falls Road which is Catholic. This is where Nelson Mandela visited and we drew our names on the wall to add to the millions there already
