Northern Ireland - Giants causeway

9 August 2011

We did a tour of most of Northern Island today stopping at Carrick-a-rede rope bridge, giants causeway and Londonderry or derry. It was a full on day but it was great to see so much and get an insight into the 'Troubles' of Northern Island and a kind of understanding of all the fighting that has gone on between the Catholics and Protestants.

Stunning cliffs of the Northern Ireland coast.

Carrick-a-rede rope bridge

I dont know what was meant ot be so special about the bridge but it took us across to an island and made us feel like real tourists as we had to que for ages.

The balsic rock was all patterned like this in giant columns at the giants causeway.

Columns coming out of the sea

Despite the amount of tourists it was a really neat place

Some massive columns

It was said to at one stage extend all the way to scotland

This statue stands in the middle of the road when coming into Derry or Londonderry depending on whether your prtestant or catholic. It represents that peace between them is slowly coming but not 100% there yet

The peace wall separting the protestants and catholics during the 'Troubles' between the late 1960's and 1998.

This is one fo the churches alongside the peacewall that was build also for defence

Peacewall

There were many murals to show the past conflict

The catholic side

This is where the catholics were killed on 'Bloody Sunday'
