In Vitoria to see Ken Follierts cathedral

10 July 2011

We decided to head to Vitoria to check out Ken Follierts Cathedral. I have read both his books 'Pillars of the Earth' and 'World without end' which are based the the Santa Maria cathedral here in Vitoria. We stayed with Saioa and Oier a spanish couple who showed us around for the day. There were really nice people who took us to a really good cafe for lunch where we had yummy spanish baguettes, showed us all the sights, took us walking on the outskirts of town and for a tour of the cathedral.

Most people in Vitoria live in 15 storey apartment complexes. This in the one we stayed in, in the new part of the city

Throughout the city a lot of buildings had paintings on them. Apparently each year they paint another one.

Santa Maria cathedral was still undergoing renovation

Tour through the old cathedral

Since the cathedral was originally build it has had lots of problems. Most problems occured when they changed the wooden vault(roof) into stone and the walls couldnt hold the weight so now all the walls have large curves in them and everything is crooked and cracked

The huge renovation project is expected to finish in the next 2 years
