San Fermin (Running of the bulls)

11 July 2011

We arrived in Pamplona to EVERYONE wearing red and white, so we headed straight to the shops and brought some kit. There were people partying hard everywhere in the streets, pubs, squares with marching groups, bands, funfair and things happening everywhere. You just have to think of the biggest street party ever with over 1 million people over 7 days and you will be close to imagining what it was like.

Running of the bulls originated when bulls had to be brought from the farms into the town centre to the bull ring for the bull fights. Somewhere along the way people started running with them.

During the 7 days of the festival there is a bull run every morning at 8am where 6 bulls(500-650kg), 6 steers and hundreds of people run the 850m through the streets on Pamplona and into the bull arena. Everyone that runs then jumps in the ring and tries their luck with 5 baby bulls that are put in the ring to give the crowd some entertainment. Then in the afternoon after siesta the six bulls are in the bullfight and then everyone parties hard late into the morning.
