Day trip to Segovia

18 July 2011

We wanted a break from the big city so we caught a bus to Segovia, a small town surrounded by farmland and hills 1hr ou of Madrid. Here we saw a Roman Aqueduct and a fairytale like "Alcazar" or castle as well as another Gothic style cathedral. In the evening we had a very nice buffet meal where we tried some local dishes including Paella, a sort of seafood risotto, and Gazpacho, a kind of cold tomato soup.

The aqueduct across the main part of the city

We followed these signs through the old city which is where the aqueduct used to extend to

The Alcazar castle

We walked around the castle grounds and around the bottom of the wall along the river

The aqueduct was used to supply the town with water. This huge wall extended 17km from the mountains bringing fresh mountain water along the top of the wall in a channel. Its a world hertitage site and one of the most intact Roman Ruin found.

The wall extended all the way through town between buildings

This is the channel at the top of the wall where the water used to flow

We tried the traditional dish 'Paella' which is seafood risotto with prawns and mussels

We enjoyed our big feed at the buffet
