South East Asia - first impressions

26 and 27 November 2012

Our South East Asia trip has began. We arrived last night in Bangkok to a surprisingly developed overly huge city. The culture shock started at the airport with a taxi that kept braking down, scamming, then rain, dirty streets and fish sauce smells. Instantly we stepped into a different world of the luxury of the Jasmine Hotel.
We took Glenns lead as Bangkok is his second home after having spent a gap year here and explored the city. Karen and I were like sponges trying to take everything in from the skytrain, tuk tuk, grand palace, Kalson Road, boat cruise on the Mekong, and learning to bargain in the markets.

Bangkok from our hotel room. We used the mostly the skytrain to get around the city.

A full on buffet breakfast at the hotel got us all fueled up for sightseeing. There was great food from all corners of the globe - I couldnt stop eating the pork buns.....so yum.

Dance lessons at the tourist office, haha.

We had a boat tour of bangkoks numerous canals and along the Mekong river. This is Asias version of Venice, a great way to see the city and see how the locals got around in the early days. Despite the waterways being heavily polluted we still saw hundreds of fish and even a crocodile sunning itself.

The floating markets - a few people stopped alongside the boat to see if we wanted a drink or food.

Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew - we had a great time looking through the various temples, statues and buildings of the grand palace.

The complex really is the grand daddy of all the temples I have seen.

All the school kids wanted to have photos of us when they dressed us in tradional thai clothes at the Textile Museum

Authentic Pad thai street food

Relaxing swim in the pool before hitting the sauna and steam room at the hotel

I was right into Muay Thai during my days at Uni so I couldnt miss out on seeing some matches in Bangkok where Muay Thai originated. We hung out with the locals in the 3rd class seats and watched some good matches. Great to see them do the traditional dances before each fight.
