This is a walk we have been wanting to do for months. After a couple of days at Whangamata and a clear patch in the weather we headed upstream from Thames into the Kauaeranga Valley. It was a really nice day walk up through the old kauri logger tracks for some spectacular views from the top of the pinnacles.
All the tracks thoughout the Kauaeranga Valley
Stream crossing
Old Hydro Dam via Webb Creek
We followed the Webb Creek trail up the original stairs and stone paths constructed for packhorses to bring supplies to the kauri loggers, gum diggers and gold miners
First set of pinnacles. Formed by volcanic action and erosion
After reaching the hut it was a rugged climb to the top of the main pinnacles. This is looking down towards the hut
We made the summit
There were some great views of pinnacles as far as the eye could see
We were able to see all the way out to Tairua and Pauanui and back across to the Waikato plains
The 80 bunk pinnalces hut
The dancing camp Kauri Dam - several of these dams were constructed to transport kauri from this steep country by storing and then releasing water and the logs.
Back vis the billygoat track
A massive waterfall
A steep tram took the logs from the area down to the valley to avoid the waterfall which destroyed the kauri logs
Back across one a bridge stream crossing
