Cadbury and Speights factories in Dunedin

11 April 2012

We wanted to make the most of our short time in Dunedin so had an action packed day. We started at Cadbury World for a tour of the factory - nothing was working in the factory so we couldnt see anything being made or do some testing which was pretty disappointing. Karen, Glenn and I then hiked up Baldwin street, the steepest street in the world. Some little kids were having jaffa races from the top

Cadbury World car

The silo's at cadbury world. Visitors go inside the silo to watch chocolate flow down from the top.

Baldwin Street. The worlds steepest street

It doesnt seem so steep from the bottom until you get almost to the top where its at its steepest

The steepest section has a gradient of 1 in 2.86

We walked through the uni campass on our way back to town

Speights factory - one of the old copper kettles which is now used to store water

This man gave us a tour of the factory. Told us about the history of beer, the history of speights and showed us the machines used in the brewing process here

In the taste testing room we had 6 different beers we could try. Pilsner, Porter, Summit, Distinction Ale, Cider, and the normal Speights Pale Ale.

We all went around in a big circle pouring our own beers. The girls even keep up as we tried each type a couple of times.

Speights source their water from a spring directly below the factory. They have a tap outside where hundreds of people stop each day to fill their water bottles with this highly valued water.
