Deutsches Museum (German Museum)

26 October 2011

Its a little sad as today was our last day in Europe. Being a rainy day meant it was a great day to visit the German Museum so we spent a few hours cruising around the endless displays and exhibits.

There were hundreds of full size planes and engines. This is the Lochhead F-104G Starfighter - a supersonic multi purpose combat aircraft. In the 60s and 70s this was the main aircraft of the West German Air Force

This is a cross section of a Boeing 747. Its interesting to see that the part where we sit is only half of the plane. The Boeing 747 was the first wide body jet introduced to civil air traffic in 1970 and the most popular plane for long distance mass transport.

The Aggregat 4 also called the Vengeance Weapon 2 rocket was the worlds first large rocket launched on October 3, 1942. It was used in WWII by the German army as a long range guided missile to attach Cities and industrial facilities.

They had a really good display about pilot ejection seats. This is one on F-104G.

They had a really exciting space exhibition about the different planets, past space expeditions, international space station, and satellites. These are the different rockets that have gone to space from the US. It was interesting to see the difference between the Russian and US rockets and their progress in size over such a short period of time.

There was a large section about the alternative forms of energy production. This was about the research done with nuclear fusion. Plasma is heated to at least 100 million degrees inside a locked magnetic tube and a fusion reaction takes place and generates energy.

There were lots of interesting robots. This is my favourite - Armar II Andropromorphic Service Robot. It is a humaniod robot capable of learning for household use. It can retrieve objects, set the table, load and unload the dishwasher etc. It can grip, touch, speak and understand general commands.

This is the worlds first automatic milking systems, put on the market in 1992. The cow walks onto the platform on its own. If it is due to be milked, it is fed and then a robot cleans the teats and uses a lazer to attach the teat cups. The cow is milked and the milk si quality tested at the same time.

While waiting in Munich airport to fly to Hong Kong we couldnt help but have one last visit to the bakery. Raspberry torte.
