A few showers this morning turned into a great sunny day later on as we headed north to Sneek then over a large 30km long dyke. We caught a ferry over to Texel Island from Den Helder which we explored by bike.
Every morning there has been a big mist cloud. Today it didnt disappear. This is a quick stop on one of the dikes on our way north.
The mist was so thick you couldnt even see the top of the wind turbines.
Driving across the Afsluitdijk dam into the mist. It runs 30km turning the Zuiderzee into a freshwater lake.
On one side of the dam is fresh water and on the other side is saltwater. When the tide goes out the gates are opened to let the river water out but are then closed when the tide comes in to stop the salination of the land.
We caught a ferry from Den Helder to Texel Island. It was one of the best kitted out car ferries I have seen for only a 20 minute ride.
We rode through a lot of farm land. This farmer was plouging land the old way using horses.
We stopped at a few beaches along the way. This is De Koog beach.
Riding through some oak forest
Even this island was surrounded by either Dikes or large sanddunes the entire way around just like the mainland.
Oystercatchers hanging out at the edge of the dike
Sheep grazing on top of the Dike
Heading back to the mainland we saw hundreds of bird flocks passing overhead. If you look close you can see a flock.
