After 2 hours sleep we jumped on a bus to Bunol a small town 1hr from Valencia. As be arrived thousands of people piled into the main streets. We were entertained by locals throwing water off their balconies and one man who had his garden hose out watering everyone. Another man kept tossing huge drums of water onto the crowds probably knocking people over, it was really funny.
In the middle of the square there is a big ham up the top of the pole covered in lard. People made human towers to reach the ham and when someone grabs the ham the fight starts. This was the first time in a few years that someone actually was able to reach the ham and the gun went off at 11am and the fight started. Four trucks piled high with tomatoes dumped thousands of tomatoes in the streets and tomatoes then the tomatoes went flying. The ground turned into a pile of ketchup. We were covered from head to toe with bits of tomato.
It was really hot waiting for the fight to start so locals were throwing buckets of water onto the crowd to keep us cool.

Someone attemping to reach the ham so the festival can begin
Tomatoes start flying

Chaos in the streets as Tomatoes fly everywhere.

One of the big trucks bringing the tomatoes through the streets
