Day trip to Brugge (Bruges)

18 September 2011

We had a great day roaming the streets of this small but nice medieval town. This town used to be Europes leading trade centre in the 14th century. However the canals linking the waterways to the sea silted up. There was a lot of entertainment in the streets with live bands, orchestras, funfair rides and dancers.

A old building covered in ivy

The main canal through the middle of the city. From the building on the left Colin Farrell jumps into the canal in the movie 'Inbruges'

We climbed the Belfort which is a tower of 366 steps to get a view of the city. They had this very sophisticated bell system with all the strings leading to a round pulley system to play certain tunes.

All the old houses and buildings of Bruges.

The cute little towns of the main square

We decided to give Belgiums version of Mcdonalds a go called QUICK

They guys were very funny running around the square freaking everyone out with their long extending necks and twisting heads.

There were horse and carriages everywhere

An orchestra playing some tunes in the fishmarket

This basilica has a few coagulated drops of Christ's blood which we had a look at.

The Belford by boat

One of the churches contained Michelangelo's 'Madonna and Child' marble statue.

We had a tour of the Halve Mann brewery. The lady took us through the processes of their beer but wouldn't reveal the secret ingredients of what makes a good belgium beer. She kept talking about the special hops they use which are related to marijuana calling it hoppy beer. These are the beer maturing barrels.

Taste testing their blond beer.
