All the kiwi junior boats floating in the kiddies pond
I was excited by the very hard technical course was set for the Nationals allowing the different options at gate 4 and 6. After some close examination of the demos video my plan was set and I was ready to race.
The first run started off solid and fast with me minting the first 3 gates. My pivot in gate 4 turned in disaster as I tail hit the rocks at the bottom and I had to spin. I played catch up the entire way down the course gaining back some time I lost in this gate. Video analysis revealed 5 seconds lost on gate 4 which was just a simple mistake that I paid for dearly. Despite being 5 seconds down from first place I didn’t give up hope. I went out giving it a real good go in my second run with nothing to loose. I gave it my all gaining one of the fastest C1 run times of the day but it was not enough to make up the time I lost at gate 4 in my first run. I ended up in 5th place. Had a raced two like that I would have made the podium in 2nd place but that’s slalom racing, you gotta pull out two fast runs on the day to get the goods not just one.
This was some important competitive racing which I needed to prepare for the NZ selections at the end of this month (my first peak of the year).
Mike Dawson gained the best result of the day for the kiwis, bringing back a silver in the Senior Mens K1 gaining a time 2 seconds behind Warrick Draper
