Leipzig

8 October 2011

We stayed with Julia and her family in Zwenkau just outside of Leipzig. Julia and Robert showed us all around the sights of the city. This is the first real former East German city I have been to and it was interesting hearing all about the differences between growing up in East and West and seeing the physical differences within the city.

We enjoyed eating some yummy home cooked German food and trying a whole lot of different German beers.

On of the biggest breakfasts ever with Julia and her family

A Leipzig specialty. Marsipan cake

We stopped by the Leipzig slalom course where they had a world cup this year at the Markkleeberg course.

We stopped at the 'Monument of the battle of the nations'

Entrance to the Leipzig university. It was so flash like walking into a palace.

Federal Administrative Court of Germany

This city is famous for Goethe. This monument shows his as a young law student at university

The inside of St Nicolas church was incredible.

This is the double cupola at the entrance. This church is really famous as this is where the uprising against the soviets started which resulted in the fall of the Berlin and East German Wall.

We escaped the rain in this nice cafe where we tried some yummy German cakes with Robert and Julia

We had an amazing view of Leipzig from the Panorama Tower building. The areas surrounding Leipzig are very rich with coal. There are many coal mines which have been mined and then filled in with water to create lakes which is how they created the slalom course in Markkleeberg. This is a coal mine.

The Hauptbahnhof and Leipzig centre.

The tower on the left is where we got the elevator up for the city view and the building on the left is the reconstruction of a church which will now be part of a university as the old church was blown up by the soviets.

St Thomas church. This is where Johann Sebastian Bach worked as a cantor.

We tried a few German beers and this green drink called woodruff which they sometimes add to beer.
