We passed through Inverness quickly and headed down Loch Ness. We stopped at a great place telling the history behind the Monster and the millions of dollars of research done to try and find something.. We also stopped at Fort Augustus and saw boats going through the locks that run from Fort William right through to Inverness. We continued up the other side of the loch at went for a swim at a beach but we still couldn't find Nessie. That night we camped on a back road on the way to the Cairngoms. The midges are still out in force so dinner has been eaten inside our (very tiny) tent the last few nights.
We reach Loch Ness the largest lake in Great Britain. At 37km in length and 230m at its deepest point its a pretty massiove lake.
Urquhart castle on the north shore of Loch Ness
We did a walk out to some waterfalls at Invermoriston.
With the rain the midges have come out in swarms and they love us. They are even worse than NZ west coast sandflies
It take boats 1.5hrs to get through this lock at Fort Augustus. It is part of the caledonian canal system which joins Fort William with Inverness. It was built for boats to travel most of Scotland without having to travel on the stormy coast.
Making the most of a break in the rain showers on the shores of Loch Ness at Fort Augustus
We went for a short walk in between showers to the top of a mountain with some great views of the surrounding valleys
This was another lochen (small lake or tarn) on the walk. I have never seen so many lochs and lochens in my life. THEY ARE EVERYWHERE IN SCOTLAND
We stop for a walk to Foyers falls which was spectacular with all the rain today.
Looking for the Loch Ness monster on the misty banks of Loch Ness. We spot a black bulge out of the water..................which turns out to be a boat in the distance.
We give haggis a go. Fried on both sides its actually not too bad.
We folled this single lane road for km through the hills until we found this nice little place to camp next to a stream
