Scafell Pike - Englands highest peak

24 July 2011

We arrived in Winderemere the first town of the lakes district and discovered hundreds of hikes we could do. We realised we wouldn't be able to get to the best places by bus, so we hired a car, stocked up on food and set off to Wasdale (Over a very steep and narrow mountain pass) We stumbled across a great simple no reservations campsite- a relief as we had lost count of the number of "sorry campsite full" or "no vacancies" signs we had passed. Before we left Windermere we also walked up to a lookout to catch a glimpse of the air show happening that day. The view was nice but we didn't see many exciting moves from the planes.

The walk up Skafell pike (978m) was great, especially along the tops of the range. Walking here is a bit different to NZ- even for one of the country's most popular routes a topo map is almost essential, not so much due to poor tracks but mainly due to a serious lack of signage (we saw one sign all day) and the huge number of paths they have cris-crossing the mountians in all directions.

The walks were all over farm land, there are no real forests in this National Park

Mark swimming in the tarn

Stone fences everywhere.
