After watching the movie Gladiator last night we were all pumped up to see the collusseum. It was great hearing all about the gladiator games and the fact that this massive structure was built just for the one purpose.
It was hard to take in all the history of the roman forum and palatine hill with thousands of years of structures being build on top of each other. Its hard to believe that these columns, and buildings have survived so long. Today was a real history day for sure
The mouth of truth (La Bocca della Verità ) in Santa Maria. The legend has it that if you put your hand in it mouth and tell a lie it will bite it off.
Monumento Emanuele 2 - there was some pictures of about 7 workers having dinner inside the giant horse statue in the centre of the monument which shows you the size of it.
We couldnt miss checking out the collusseum.
Inside the Collusseum. We did an audioguide tour which told us all about the gladiator fights, animal fights and underground passages and elevators.
We couldnt believe that when the collusseum closed down that they dismantled a lot of the marble and used it to build surrounding churches and monuments.
Constanine Arch - another enomous structure left over from Roman times
The roman forum.
