Checking out the countryside and wineries

29 June 2011

We are now in Siena waiting for the Palio (horse racing festival to start). We checked out the Tuscany countryside in the Chianti region today by hiring a scooter. We zoomed around all day stopping at cool little towns, castles, and wineries where we tasted the local wine and did a wine tour.

We stop for some wine tasting at near Castellina in Chianti for some wine tasting where they apparently had the best sauvignon blanc in the world

We stop for the biggest pizza I have ever seen in Radda in Chianti

We visited this old monastry at Badia a Coltibuono where we did a tour. This was the big barrels of wine in the crypt which has a constant temperature year round due to the fungi growing on the walls.

They has a stockpile of really old wine - some dating back to 1937

They had hundreds of old bottles of wine in the cellar
