Relaxing on the beach in Sihanoukville (Kompong Som)

8,9 and 10 December 2012

We had the biggest day of travelling so far in the trip going from northern Cambodia right to the south to Cambodias beaches. We spent over 14hours on buses travelling though Phnom Penh to get there. It was very late when we arrived at Otres beach the furthest and quietest in Sihanoukville but well worth it.

What better way to explore all the beaches than by scooter. We had a great day cruising around stopping at each beach for either a swim, bite to eat, cold beer, cocktail or coconut shake (so so yum). The city centre of Sihanoukville was absolute chaos with cows walking down the middle of the 4 lane road amongst hundreds of scooter and cars. The traffic lights here are just a suggestion as no one stops. Karens petrol gauge was not working on her scooter and it ran out luckily 100m from the hire shop.

We did a day boat tour of the surrounding islands. We made the most of the warm water and went swimming, snorkelling, and walked around one of the islands.

The delicous Cambodian bakery keep us going on our long bus ride to the southern beaches

Scooter Tour

Angkor Beer factory. We have been drinking Angkor ever since we arrived in Cambodia so couldnt not stop by the factory

Glenn and his beast. This was an offroad tracks out to the waterfall where all the locals go on a hot day.

Cooling off with a swim in one of the waterfalls

Relaxing on Victory beach for lunch

We found some great beaches along the way but Serendepity beach was horrible, crowded and polluted. We were so glad we chose to stay at Otres

The southern end of Occheuteal Beach. All around there were many half finished hotels left abandoned. After taking to these british guys who ran a pub we found that no one can own land here and that everything is temporary. There are certain officials that turn up randomly asking for money and if you don’t pay they kick you out.

We stayed at these bungalows

Stopping for a swim at Independence Beach

Island Tour

We stopped at a couple of different spots for snorkelling which had some interesting reefs and sealife. We found this large purple sea anemone

School of small tropical fish

We stopped for lunch at Kaoh Ruessei Island. You can see our boat in the background

Karen made of the most of the sunbathing while Glenn and I went swimming.

Tight squeeze on the boat. Its a shame the man who sold us the tour lied blatantly about EVERYTHING in the tour but we made the most of it anyway and had a good day.

Some large coral on the reef

At one snorkelling spot these spiky urchins covered the reef.

I stayed well clear of these urchins as I had bad memories of one spiking me in Panama.
