Sights of Wellington

15 Nov 2012

We spent a few days in Wellington catching up with friends and family and got to see some of the sights as well as meet the royals.

View from the top of Mt Victoria we watched the planes come into land

Random sculpture

The good old Welliwood sign

Weta studios

Watching the Interislander come in from Kau Bay

Scorching Bay

Arty paua shell shop

We did a tour of the beehive and got to go into the chambers. Sounds boring I know but it was actually really interesting.

With a nice day forecast we took to ferry across to Matiu/Somes Island a predator free DOC island in the middle of Wellington harbour.

The water was so calm it was glassy and everywhere you looked was incredibly scenic. Wellington city centre is in the background

We were told that tuatara were released on the western side of the island and Karen spotted this medium sized one on the side of the track sunning itself.

There were some well made tracks with some spectacular views of the city

Lighthouse and a nesting black backed gull

Old gun emplacements

This island used to be used an animal quarantine station and these are some of the historical buildings left.

A cook straight giant weta

After our trip out to the island we noticed huge crowds of people lined up along the waterfront to hear that Prince Charles and Camila were in town.

Karen and I walked up to see what was happening and ended up being in the front of the crowd and they shook our hands
