Harvesting hops

16 March 2012

I decided to try growing my own hop plant this summer. The last few weeks they have been growing rapidly and I had a large harvest today for a first year plant.

My hop plant and vines in the back garden - they started growing really fast the last few weeks

A bunch of cones

This variety of hop is a wild type from Puhoi. They have a very fresh smell so im excited to see how they go in my beer

This yellow stuff is called lupin which contains the resin and oils which are important for the bittering and aroma in beers

I harvested my three vines by cutting them and them picking off the hops

Me stoked by such a large number of cones for my first attempt at hop growing

I ended up with 98grams of wet hops

After picking I left them in the hot water cupboard for 1.5days and finished up with 24grams of dry hops
