Gouda, Delft

23 September 2011

What a crazy country. I could sum the Netherlands up in four words: bikes, dykes, windmills and canals. You find all four things EVERYWHERE,
This could have to be the only country where canal boats pass 3 metres above you while you drive along the road. Then where you have a 6 lane motorway going under those canals.
It was so weird to see massive container ships cruising down these tiny canals miles and miles from the sea.

We picked up our rental car then were on our way. We explored the cities of Gouda famous for its cheese and Delft famous for its blue and white china. Both really nice typical sort of Holland towns.

We were so excited to see our first windmill so we stopped and had a look. Then they started popping up everywhere.

Because of all the canals throughout each town/city we kept seeing bridges lifting up to let big boats through. This was a large container ship travelling down the canal.

Thats a lot of cheese. We tried a few types of the local specialty cheeses in Gouda which is world famous.

The main square of Gouda had been turned into a fun fair with lots of rides. You can see the town hall in the middle.

The streets were lined with their famous cheese hanging above. They really are proud.

We stopped in a few stores where they were selling Delft China. Again it is known throughout the world

Karen in a big wooden clog. It sounds crazy but we actually saw a couple of Dutch people walking in them.

Even the lamposts were made from Delft China
