Versaillies

13 September 2011

We caught the train to the outskirts of Paris to Versaillies to visit the famous Palace. The gardens were humungous with fountains, ponds, hedges, gardens, and statues everywhere. You could spend an entire day getting lost there. Every Tuesday is a special day where they have the music fountains going. The fountains displayed a show with classical music.

We then visited the worlds most visited graveyard Cimetiere du Pere Lachaise. This was the largest cemetery I have even seen with really flash graves. There were a lot of famous people buried here.

We also went to Arc du Troimph and were entertained by the traffis on the enormous roundabout. There were 10 unmarked lanes with cars, scooters, bikes, trucks and motorbikes everywhere trying to go in all directions. There seemed to be a car horn blowing every 15 seconds as the cars played chicken to get on and off the roundabout.

Looking down the main street from the palace

The entire palace in all its glory from the front. A very popular tourist attraction with people everywhere

The gigantic royal gardens of the palace stretched for miles and were very spectacular.

The music fountain at its climax

Enjoying some lunch while the fountains went hard to classical music

One of the many interesting flower gardens

There were a lot of scrubs throughout the garden which were pruned in strange shapes like this

It was really funny at this garden as there was a man who blew his whistle every 30 seconds to tell people to get off the grass

How pretty

The palace up close. It had gold plated.

We could see the top of the Eiffel tower from our hostel room in the suburbs of Clichy.

Pere Lachaise cemetery - the worlds most visited graveyard

The memorial flame of the unknown soldier at 'Arc de Triomphe' being rekindled.

There were some really huge statues.

French soldiers parading around the arc.

The grave of the unknown soldier. We were told a story about two times when the flame went out. A Irishmen was coming home from the pub one night and pissed on it which put it out - he was sent straight back to Ireland and the government made a big apology. Another time some aussies couldnt find a place to cook there food so they set up bbq here - they too were sent home but the government refused to apologise.
