It was my birthday last week and Karen surprised me with a helicopter intro flight at Ardmore airport in South Auckland.
She said we were just going to the cafe for a birthday lunch and then rocked up at the helicopter lessons school. It was straight into a helicopter up into the air and then after a few instructions I was flying it over Clevedon all by myself.
We did an auto rotation where you stop the engine, drop really fast and loose your stomach which was wicked. I had a go at hovering over some landing pads at the air field, it was a bit overwhelming with 5 different controls and a real chance of crashing being so close to the ground but I got used to it pretty quickly.
I was stocked as I have been wanting to go in a helicopter for forever and getting to drive it just topped it off.
