Exploring Tiritiri Matangi

The 360 ferry got us out there from Whangaparaoa

Map of the island

This friendly New Zealand wood pigeon was sitting on a cabbage tree.

We stumbled across a family of 6 saddlebacks.

We found a pair of Takahe on the northern end of the island hiding in some flax

Since I have never been to Tiritiri Matangi Karen shouted me a trip there for christmas. This island was replanted from pasture and eradicated of pests in the last few years, and DOC has reintroduced rare New Zealand species such as kokako, kiwi, saddlebacks, tuatara, tahake and stitchbirds which thrive on the lifeboat island. Its a cool island full of life, we didnt see tuatara or kiwi so will have to spend the night there some time
