Dead didymo cells found in Central Plateau river samples

Didymo in a South Island River

Didymo clogs up the entire river system and is very invasive.

31 October 2007

I was checking out the news headlines last night to see the bad news that dead didymo cells have been found in the North Island. This is really shit for us kayakers as it reduces the quality of the water and can be a health risk

''Biosecurity New Zealand says it is moving quickly to establish whether the freshwater algae Didymo has spread to the North Island. Dead cells have been discovered in Tongariro, Whakapapa, Mangatepopo and Whanganui rivers. Didymo was first found in Southland in 2004 and has since spread through a number of waterways in the South Island.''
