The smoke in Eildon from the forest fires
29.12.06
Finally arrived in Melbourne yesterday morning after flight and baggage delays. We decided to stay with some of Tanias parents friends the night before heading out to Eildon today. So we had a nice afternoon session on a small lake. Half way through the session we heard a big splash and looked over to see the white belly of a crocodile 20m away from us. We were pretty freaked until shortly after a local told us it was only a platapus.
First thing in the morning we headed out to Eildon. It was very evident that the forest fires that have been burning for weeks now were still going. The air was thick with grey smoke getting denser the further into the mountains we got. A few days ago the organisers were worried the event would have to be cancelled as the forest fires were burning out of control so close to the course, however the drop in wind and downfalls of rain in the last few days had put much of the fires out.
Its been a good 7 years since I was last here for my New Zealand junior tour in this very isolated location 3 hours out of Melbourne. Tania, Aaron and I will doing demo runs and forerunners for the Australian Secondary School Camps tomorrow which will be some good race prep for the pre and Aussie Nationals on the 3rd,5th and 6th of January.
These posts are a little late as I haven’t had email excess for 12 days.
