Escaping the New Zealand Winter to Niue - DAY 1 to 2

8th to 19th July 2014

Niue has been on my bucket list for years, a small, unique, untouched remote island in the pacific with some of the best visiablity for diving in the world.  If your the outdoors type of person in for a bit of adventure and exploring then Niue is the place for you. Karen and I had a wicked 10 days visiting different parts of the island by bike, kayak, boat, car and foot.

We started off with a crazy morning after packing the wrong passport and almost missing our flight, so it was great feeling to get on the plane for the 3 1/2hr trip to Niue.  We arrived to warm sunny tropical island weather, friendly faces and locals playing island music - a great way to start our holiday.

The first few days we stayed in alofi and explored the western side of the island before moving over to the other side of the island and staying in the small village of Liku. We did the island orientation tour to make sure we did not miss any of the best spots before jumping in a rental with mask, snorkel, togs and walking shoes to see all the main sites along the alofi west coast.

DAY 1 & 2 - Western side of the island - Alofi, Matapa Chasm, Limu Pools, Talava Arches, and hundreds of sea tracks
Arriving on the once a week flight to Alofi airport
A nice hot typical sunny day in Niue
Vaka - a wooden canoe used by the locals to catch fish
Trying to spot some whales from one of the sea tracks along the Alofi coast
Beautiful Island sunset from Tomb Point
What an awesome way to finish our first day on the island at Jenna's buffet dinner full of yummy niuean food like uga soup, fresh wahoo marinated in coconut milk
An awesome wooden statue dish I have ever seen
The night ended in a few performances from some of the local kids however most of them were missing with the school holidays having gone to NZ
The coastal tracks were crawling with thes blue tailer skinks.
This ring round goes around the island

Limu Pools - great place to snorkel abundant with fish, glad i had my 3mm wetsuit as it was still a little chilly
Poisonous sea snake in Limu pools
Me jumping off the cliff at Matapa Chasm.  Another nice area for snorkelling but best during the middle of the day when the sun is overhead
Ruins of a building destroyed in cyclone Heta in December 2003/January 2004.  These abandoned buildings litter the island which are laregly overgrown in tropical scrub.
Peniaminas Grave - the grave of the man that brought christianity to the island in 1846
The coastline had endless caves to explore
Fossilised coral found on the inner reef
View out to sea showing the shallow inner reef that you can walk across at low tide
Coconut gathering -  the locals had an easier way where they used a hook on a long piece of bamboo
Checking out one of hundreds of sea tracks
Talava arches - my favourite place on the island. You take a 30minute walk through coastal forest to these three massive arches with caves surrounding.
