Day 27 - At sea on our way to the Snares

13 February 2014

Everything is coming to an end here on the ship as we get further and further north to the snares. It is so warm on board it feels like summer and I got away with just wearing shorts and tshirts all day inside and out.

The highlight of today was the orcas that suddenly started swimming alongside the boat. There was a call over the speakers and I was off to catch a glimpse of several individuals alongside the boat. They stayed with us for several minutes as the pod of approximately 15 swam alongside the boat. The females seemed to get really close looking sideways up at us, but the males kept their distance. One large male threw itself up into the air causing a huge splash. It was an interesting encounter where they seemed just as curious as we were of them. We were told this was the best encounter with orcas the trip has ever had which make you feel so lucky to be in the right place at the right time for such a rare event.

Had a very detailed tutorial on photography today learning how to process images from Scott. It was great catching up with the advancements and detail of what you can do with post processing of images in modern day photography. It was a big learning curve and well needed tutorial for me.

An unbelievable encounter with a pod of 15 Orcas that swam alongside the boat

Turns out these were the extremely elusive Type D orcas, a possible species only recorded 15 times ever (including this sighting). Fantastic!
