Trip to Whale Island (Motuhora)

A perfect day on the water. Crystal clear calm water with the sun shining

After 2 hours I reached the part of whale island where DOC land their boats.

Whale is an island lifeboat with many rare species such as saddlebacks, kiwi and tuatara so is protected by DOC.

There was a seal colony on southeast rocks of the island. This one was snoring

There were really steep cliff faces with massive caves

This is the saddle

Stopping for a fish on the white island side of the island

Everyday I took out to sea and see whale island sitting out there in front of me.
With perfect conditions on the sea and great weather I couldnt resist paddling out there yesterday.

This volcanic island 9km off the coast is home to rare endemic species and is covered in scrub, patches of forest and dunes.

It was a big day but I managed to kayak right the way around and fish in a few spots on the way. I caught some snapper, kawahai, blue maomao, and yellow tail.
