Medium burn river, the track follows this clean pristine river upstream
This is rock bivvy where school groups stop and stay under this shelter formed from a big limestone boulder
My first river crossing over the medium burn, it doesnt look deep but was well over my waist and freezing cold.
Totara and celery pine dominated part of the forest which was a nice change from the beech
An incredible clearing with the best views ever looking over the track I had already walked today
A really interesting moss like plant forming a banket on the open areas of this rockface.
Looking up the valley where im headed towards Mt tiritia
Another weird moss like plant
After walking 5.5hrs hours in the forest I reached a tussock/hebe clearing.
I found this neat little tin hut on the otherside of the clearing, a little 2 bunk hut with everything I needed right next to the stream
After a nice fire and good feed last night I woke up to fog in the valley
Spiderweb on the dunny covered in dew
The fog clears to reveal another sunny awesome day
The crystal clear stream runnning along side the hut
Some of the mountain beech trees where starting to fruit
After the tramp I drove to Lake Monowai for a wander
9 November 2010
I had the weekend off before a full week of work next week so I drove south towards the borland tracks near Lake Monowai. I did the track to North Borland Hut through beech and totara/celery pine forest. It was a mint but hard tramp with my first real river crossings and a wicked hut at the edge of an alpine tussock clearing by a river.
